Hi everyone, this is Theresa Kung. I am going to share my experience in applying graduate school. I came to the states for my bachelor degree in Stony Brook University, studying biochemistry. After that, I went to Columbia University for my master degree in Biotechnology and, currently, I am working in the states. Before applying to a graduate school, I would suggest that you first make sure what program interests you the most. Usually, graduate program will be more specialized in a certain area compared to undergraduate. It could be suffering if, in the future, you figure that the program is not what you want to study.Once you know which programs you want to pursue, you should start searching the schools that offer the program and compare the resources that each school offer, for example, course contents, internship opportunities, research area, future job opportunities, etc. You can also ask the alumni from the program through linkedIn to get a more direct feedback. In terms of preparing for applications, most programs require the same things such as GRE score, transcript, three recommendation letters, personal statement, etc. In terms of the GRE, verbal should be the most difficult part for international students and it can be overcome by memorizing vocabulary words and doing mock exams. While writing for your personal statement, I suggest that you write different ones for each program. For example, you can write why you want to apply to the program specifically, which can be the resources of the program or research that interests you. To let the admission officer know more about me from different aspects, I asked two professors and one manager, from where I interned previously, to provide recommendation letters for me. Finally, I also recommend this platform to you all to share your experience on college/ graduate school application and wish all of you are able to enter your dream school.
